Although the above note states that John could write, a copy of his wil l written in 1877 shows that he signed with an X rather that a signatur e.
In his Will he appoints his son Cornelius John as Sole Executor and lea ves everything to Cornelius and his heirs. The Will was proved at Winch ester on 26 September 1877 and valued at under £100.
(Copy of Will in file)

On the papers referring to the Will of his son-in-law, Edward Nicholson , he does actually sign the paper.

On his son Theophilus' marriage certificate his occupation is listed as S eaman RN. This may or may not be correct. It seems unlikely as he would h ave been 67 years old at the time!
