In the 1851 census Henry and Sarah were living in Brandy Mount, in Gos port, were his occupation was listed as 'in the Coast Guard'. At this t ime they had 3 daughters.

In the 1861 census Henry's occupation is listed as Commisioned Boatman, C oastguard Service. His name was listed as William but as all the other d etails i.e. age, wife, children etc. match it is him! The family were living at Lumps Road Coastguard Station on Portsea Isla nd. His sister Eleanor was also at this address on census night.

In 1871 census Henry and family were at Southwick Coast Guard Station, F ishersgate, West Sussex, By this time Henry was Chief Officer 2nd Class, Coast Guard. Before mov ing to Southwick it appears he was stationed at Sandgate, Kent for a ti me according to the birthplace of his son Alfred.

He was appointed to the Coast Guard Service on the Shamrock Revenue Cru iser on 14th July 1840 aged 17. He transferred to the Kite Revenue Crui ser on 28th June 1845 by order of the Inspector General. He was dischar ged from the Kite on 13th August 1845 to a shore station.

He was stationed at Portsmouth Harbour from 21 July 1845, the same stat ion as his future father-in-law, John Mountifield. From here he moved t o Southsea, and was promoted, on 29th August 1856.
